When “Perfect” Steps Aside

I learned an important lesson recently through an experience that reminded me how easily we can become attached to a specific idea of what the “right” outcome should look like. My takeaway from this experience is this: sometimes, letting go of a perfect scenario, or what we believe is the ideal, can lead us to unexpected joy.

In this experience, I had a very clear picture in mind of what I thought I wanted. I had already formed ideas about the type, the look, the features, even how the experience would feel. When you have something that specific in your mind, it’s easy to believe that anything outside of it would be a compromise.

Unfortunately, the options that appeared in front of me looked very different from what I had imagined. It met many of my criteria except for one key element, which I felt was almost a deal breaker.

But something nudged me to give it a chance anyway. So I did.

And to my surprise, the experience was lovely. And what surprised me even more is how much my appreciation has grown. I’ve found myself enjoying it more and more each day. At one point I even wondered why I had been so fixed on my earlier idea in the first place.

That experience reminded me of something important: it’s not always helpful to eliminate possibilities outright without actually experiencing them.

This reflection applies to many areas of life. It could be a decision we’re making, a direction we’re exploring, or, of course, a real estate journey. We can easily become attached to specific numbers, locations, appearances, or a list of “must-haves.” Sometimes, those preferences come from good reasons. But other times, they are simply ideas we’ve grown attached to. And when we free ourselves from those attachments, we may discover that the path we didn’t originally choose can still lead us somewhere surprisingly joyful, perhaps even more delightful than what we first imagined.
